it's more that System Shock1's music is mostly action techno, with scarier sounds only in certain level sections, all of level 3 and a mixture of suspense and action in the groves. Not that you can't have music for a scary game there are too many examples to the contrary. I guess the only major reason that SS1 isn't like PID scare wise is that PID has no music, which is unnerving and enemies do not make any sounds unless they attack, suffer a pain state, or they die. (the PID equivelent to offensive PSI powers in SS2) Also, banshees cannot be killed by anything except your Isfet Crystals. These are the only way to see the invisible Wraith enemies, but you won't be able to see the shadow-like Banshees until you turn them off. One floor has Night Vision goggles that give you full draw distance, but place a dark red filter on the screen. you can even adjust the draw distance to slightly worse by turning off your flashlight. That is mainly due not only to good enemy design like SS1 has, but crappy draw distance simulating darkness, coupled with murky textures and tight hallways. Pathways into Darkness is scary even though it's like SS1 in some ways, only on Mac (I emulate the OSX port). I was born in the mid ninteies and wasn't scared by Half Life 1 which was my first FPS, even though parts of it were meant to. Originally posted by Flibedi-floob:What? "Not scary at all"? I guess that in some sense, with you being armed and it being a shooter and all, that it's not as scary as Alien Isolation, but come on - do you lack imagination or something? The game had an underlying sinister tone of terrifying dread, like nothing else.
